Panel Discusses U.S. Presidential Campaign

On October 22, American Chamber/Mexico hosted a panel of discussion on the 2008 U.S. Electoral Campaigns.  The panel included professors of the University of Texas Sean Therieault and Jason Casellas, Opinion Assistant Director of El Universal José Carreño, Senior Associate of Guerra Castellanos y Asociados Amy Glover as well as AmCham’s own Chief Economist Deborah Riner.  The conference gave insights into the current polls, the Latino vote, as well as political and economic implications for Mexico.  Amy Glover urged for progress and cooperation between the two countries:  “Mexico needs to step up and ask what kind of relationship it wants with the U.S.”  The panel agreed the current race is close and anything can happen resulting in high interest for all, including Mexico.  The more than 80 AmCham members were highly pleased with the successful event and the networking opportunity, which took place at the Club de Industriales.  By the time you read this, the elections will have been decided and the guessing game will be over.

Special Event on the Financial Crisis

American Chamber/Mexico
held a last-minute event with the Chamber’s Chief Economist Dr. Deborah Riner on October 1 to discuss the economic situation facing the United States.  Dr. Riner pointed out that the crisis was triggered by a housing issue that, in turn, led to a credit problem.  The event took place in Auditorio Casa Veerkamp and was attended by over one hundred members who listened attentively to explanations on the cause and forecasts for the worst economic crisis in recent years.  In addition to this event, the Chamber has published a number of articles on the subject to keep its members abreast of developments.

Economic Forum in Monterrey

On October 24, Deputy Governor of Mexico’s Central Bank (Banco de México) Everardo Elizondo spoke to 150 AmCham members on the current economic crisis, its negative impact on the peso’s purchasing power and the steps being taken to stop the problem from worsening.  The event, which took place at the Hotel Quinta Real, was the third and last Economic Forum for 2008 held by the Monterrey Division.  Elizondo described the current situation as a series of economic factors that had joined forces to generate an unpredictable world crisis.  He added that the Bank of Mexico had auctioned dollars to support the peso in world markets.  Even though these steps would not be enough to counteract market trends, they would at least limit the damage caused to Mexico’s economy.
